The Body of Christ Is the Ultimate Superorganism

It’s late Sunday afternoon, and I just finished watching a video podcast …

It’s apparent the host and his guest are not Christ-followers. Yet, I find that quite often when I listen to fascinating conversations in various fields of interest, a concept will emerge which I can easily see has its ultimate realization in spirituality.

And for me, this realization is in the Kingdom of God which Jesus spoke of.

What seems to be happening is that those who may not know Christ are instinctively picking up on concepts through what theologians call general revelation: God is speaking through nature, history, and even the human conscience. From the Creator’s point of view, the intent is to lead people via general revelation, bringing them to a point of special revelation in the person of Christ.

The natural tendency is to set these concepts within frameworks of understanding which are evolutionary and have no place for God. So their overall paradigm is corrupted and distorted. Those who buy in to these frameworks cannot quite get to authentic happiness, fulfillment, and the design of all things.

Superorganism

An idea which surfaced in the conversation was the concept of superorganism.

superorganism is a meta-organism made up of many organisms. A good example is a termite mound.

Organisms, like ants, termites, or bees will organize themselves socially into a superorganism. Even the earth itself, with its teeming life, is considered a superorganism as a biosphere.

The superorganism is more effective than the individual organisms which make it up. Connectivity, communication, and cooperation turn the superorganism into something phenomenal.

Consider that a marriage becomes something of a superorganism — a one-flesh reality. The family which comes from the marriage is a superorganism. Tribes and societies are superorganisms.

Here’s a Meta Thought — the Ultimate Superorganism is the Body of Christ.

The Body of Christ transcends gender, race, and socio-economic “status.” The New Testament speaks of one new man created in Christ Jesus.

The individual who is regenerated in Christ is a new species of being …

Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! (2 Cor. 5:17 AMP).

Think about the word regenerated … or re-gened. Jesus says we are born again.

And yet, taken together as the Body of Christ, there is something even more: the Ultimate Superorganism. We are born again and placed within the Body of Christ. It’s supernatural.

  • Our collective wisdom is greater than our individual wisdom. I think this is getting at what Paul really meant when he wrote, “We have the mind of Christ.”
  • Our ability together with others transcends our individual ability.
  • As a superorganism, the Body of Christ transcends time and space. It is universal.

And let’s take it one step further. The Body of Christ is one with the Godhead: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We have come into union with the union and fellowship of the Godhead. Jesus taught this in the Gospel of John.
